Tesla Mobile Connector Charging Speed by Adapter (UK & Europe)
Tesla's published current, power and range-per-hour figures for each Mobile Connector adapter sold in the UK and Europe, in one table, with what changes the real speed.
| Adapter / socket | Current | Max power | Range per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK 3-pin (BS 1363) | 10A | 2.3 kW | 15 km/h |
| Schuko (Type F) | 6–13A | 3 kW | 19 km/h |
| Switzerland (Type J) | 8–10A | 2.3 kW | 15 km/h |
| Italy (Type L) | 10–13A | 3 kW | 19 km/h |
| CEE blue 16A | 16A | 3.7 kW | 24 km/h |
| CEE blue 32A | 32A | 7.4 kW | 48 km/h |
Why household sockets are slow
Domestic sockets are designed for appliances, not for hours of continuous load. Tesla says the car sets a default current for household outlets based on local recommendations, which is why the UK 3-pin adapter is listed at 10A although BS 1363 plugs are rated 13A.
How to estimate a full overnight charge
Multiply the range-per-hour figure by the hours the car will be plugged in. Ten hours on a UK 3-pin socket adds roughly 150 km at Tesla's listed rate; ten hours on a CEE blue 32A socket adds roughly 480 km. Real results vary with the car, temperature and the installation rating.
What changes the real speed
Tesla notes that charging speed depends on the electrical installation rating, the charge-current setting in the car and the vehicle type. An old socket, a long or thin supply cable or a shared circuit can all justify setting a lower current in the car.
Which adapter to choose
Pick the adapter that matches the socket you actually have. If you can choose the socket, for example at a holiday home or workshop, a CEE blue socket installed on a suitable circuit charges two to three times faster than a household socket.
- Home in the UK: UK 3-pin, or a 16A blue socket fitted by an electrician
- Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Nordics: Schuko
- Campsites and marinas: CEE blue
- Italy and Switzerland: the national socket adapter
Frequently asked questions
How many kW does a Tesla charge at from a UK 3-pin plug?
Tesla lists the UK adapter at 10A and 2.3 kW, which adds about 15 km of range per hour.
Is Schuko faster than a UK 3-pin socket?
Slightly. Tesla lists Schuko at 6–13A and up to 3 kW (about 19 km/h) versus 2.3 kW (about 15 km/h) for the UK adapter.
What is the fastest socket for the Mobile Connector in Europe?
Of the single-phase options Tesla lists, a CEE blue 32A socket is fastest at 7.4 kW, about 48 km of range per hour.
Can I raise the current to charge faster?
Only within what the socket, wiring and adapter are rated for. If a plug or socket gets noticeably warm, stop charging and have the installation checked.
