Charging in Europe: Schuko, CEE Blue and CEE Red Adapters Explained
A country-by-country look at the Schuko, CEE blue and CEE red industrial outlet standards used for EV charging across Europe, and which adapter fits which outlet.
The three standards you'll encounter
Most European charging points use one of three plug families: Schuko (the common 16A domestic outlet used across much of continental Europe), CEE blue (a single-phase industrial 32A outlet common at campsites and marinas), and CEE red (a three-phase industrial outlet, typically 16A or 32A, found at commercial and workshop sites).
Indoor vs outdoor-rated Schuko
Standard Schuko adapters are built for typical indoor or sheltered use. An IP44-rated Schuko adapter adds protection against dust and splashing water, which matters for an outdoor wall box, carport or any installation exposed to the weather. Check the installation location before choosing between the two.
Three-phase CEE red needs extra verification
CEE red outlets exist in several current ratings and phase configurations at different sites. Confirm the exact voltage, current and pin position marked on the outlet before ordering a CEE red adapter — do not select by color alone.
Match the outlet to the right listing
Each LANVOLT European adapter listing states its standard, rating and intended installation type. Confirming the outlet marking against the listing before ordering avoids most mismatched-adapter returns.
