NEMA 10-50, 14-50 and 6-20: Tesla Adapters for EV Charger Installers

For EV charger installers and electricians: which Gen 2 adapter matches the 14-50, 10-50 and 6-20 outlets you install or find, and what to ask a supplier before you stock them.

The 10-50 gap

Many older homes have a NEMA 10-50 outlet left from an electric range or dryer. Tesla's Mobile Connector adapter list covers 14-50 and 6-50 for 50A circuits but not 10-50. When you meet a 10-50 on a job, the customer can either have the outlet replaced or use a 10-50 adapter.

Match the adapter to the outlet you install

When you install a 14-50 for a Tesla owner, a matching adapter in the box saves a second visit. For smaller panels a 6-20 on a dedicated 20A, 240V circuit is a common choice; Tesla lists the 6-20 adapter at 16A, about 15 miles of range per hour for a Model 3.

What to ask a supplier

Ask which test lab certified each model, who holds the certificate and for the control number, plus the spec sheet with the marked voltage and current.

  • NEMA 14-50P, 10-50P, 6-20P: covered by a supplier-held Intertek ETL certificate
  • Other NEMA models: ask for documentation before you stock them

Stocking for your job list

Installers usually keep 5–20 units across the outlets they fit most, and reorder as jobs come in. LANVOLT dispatches in 3–4 working days.

Frequently asked questions

Does Tesla make a NEMA 10-50 adapter?

Tesla's Mobile Connector adapter list includes NEMA 14-50 and 6-50 for 50A circuits but does not list a NEMA 10-50 adapter.

What current does a Tesla draw from a 14-50 adapter?

Tesla lists 32A for the NEMA 14-50 adapter, about 30 miles of range per hour for a Model 3.

Which LANVOLT adapters have ETL certification?

The NEMA 14-50P, 10-50P and 6-20P models are covered by a supplier-held Intertek ETL certificate. The copy and control number are sent on request.

Should I replace a 10-50 outlet with a 14-50?

That depends on the circuit, the wiring and local code. A licensed electrician should assess the installation; an adapter does not change what the circuit is rated for.
